Heh, pretty much the entire time Hopper was onscreen I was thinking "How have you not lost your feet to frostbite and gangrene by now? How are you WALKING?!" Also cringing at the worst of the painful bits, with the squishy sound effects. I dunno, I think I deal with too much chronic pain to like whump, or the hurt part of hurt/comfort. Just gimme the comfort.
I don't mind El being separated for her storyline. The plotting and pacing of it is largely working for me, though I think it could have been tightened somewhat before she learned what was going on. And it's fun to watch the gang solve problems without her superpowers.
I would have enjoyed more of El integrating into the Byers family too! Maybe less of her getting bullied at school and more of her being part of the family? I would be okay with Will being dragged off with her, but honestly...each season I seem to like Mike less. I would like him and Will back with the others, but I also don't entirely mind that he's not getting much screentime.
Ugh, you, me, and everyone else I've talked to. I'm hoping it's gonna get subverted like how they did with Robin & Steve in S3 - like, Nancy and Steve mutually realize that staying exes and loving each other as hot competent monster-hunting friends is better.
