Dance, dance, dance!
Sep. 6th, 2003 10:51 amOw. Oh, God. Ow.
Yeeeeeaaah. Swing/Salsa dance. Did not mean to overdo it quite that much.
We got a lot of people, and not all freshmen, either. It looked like somewhere between 75 and 100 atendees, depending on what time it was. And all the older members--those of us who came--got to be up front and demonstrating the steps for the newbies. I felt so useful. ;) We taught four steps in salsa (basic, underarm turn, cucarachas, and...I don't even remember) and the basic and underarm turn in single-step swing. (We usually do/compete in triple-step swing, so this was interesting. And easy!)
Then there was the two dance contests, which old KCBDC members weren't allowed to participate in. Ian and Whitney won the swing contest! Hee! They were great--they'd cooked up this whole thing with syncopated kicks and those turns where you start out facing each other and end up back-to-back while holding hands and all this stuff. It was so cool.
And then there was open dancing for the next two hours. Oooouch. Did lots of swing and cha-cha, and a little salsa, with Peter. Tried to follow Allyson in all of the above, plus samba, quickstep, and Viennese. (Neither of us has much experience at leading, but she's getting pretty good.) Nearly had several accidents in the last three, but especially samba, because you can either travel or stay in one place. So we were staying on place and Dawn and one of the U of M guys were traveling, and it didn't work out for us.
Y'know, for a salsa and swing dance, there was a hell of a lot of samba being played. *looks suspiciously at Pete, our DJ, who happens to be a general nutjob in an entertaining way*
Of course, by the last hour or so, it was just old KCBDC members, and by the last half of that, we weren't even trying for dance steps or dance partners...we were just sort of doing whatever. Random kicking things when "Jump, Jive & Wail" came on, conga-esque lines around the dance floor... Part of the problem is, of course, our persistent lack of men. Sigh. Well, that and the fact that we were all dead tired.
In other news, I am much amused by
spockette's latest icon. Hee.
ETA: And behold, the ballroom icon has returned!
