I figured out what was nagging at me wrt Weir/Torri Higginson. When she has straight hair, and is in just the right light filmed from just the right angle, she looks a little like Avengers-era Diana Rigg (especially this photo).

Olympic stuff
Aug. 15th, 2004 11:04 pmCaught some ladies gymnastics tonight, but only uneven bars and balance beam, with about ten seconds of vault at the beginning. (
rensong, any idea when floor routines are gonna be shown? Or did I just miss them?) Holy crap, I have no idea how those people do that. The little Chinese girl on the bars was incredible, as was the one who did that amazing flip/jump/whatever up onto the balance beam. (I'm rooting for China! They're awesome! I have no idea if they're doing more technically difficult things, but they sure looked harder than everyone else's. And they all have adorable smiles when they finish their routines.) I'm a little confused by the "dance" moves scattered throughout the beam routines, though--they serve no purpose that I can see, except for maybe all the toe-pointing helping them center themselves before flips and things. But I'm lost as to why they include little shimmies and butt-shaking and stuff. Seems gratuitous.
I envy gymnastics their camerawork. They show the entire body, and only do closeups on the face at the end! Shock! Amazement! Why can't we have some of those people come film skating? Pleeeeease? Drives me crazy to have the camera staring up some poor skater's nostrils when I want to see his/her feet, to see whether that loop was cheated or that lutz flutzed. If things were done my way, there'd be a top/bottom splitscreen, with the top 2/3 showing the whole body and the bottom third a continuous closeup of the feet. Failing that, at least drop the random close-ups of their faces, especially during important things like, oh, footwork sequences. It's called footwork for a reason, you dolts!
Um. I didn't mean for this to turn into yet another skating rant...
