icepixie: (Book)
So, somewhere in the neighborhood of page 200 (out of 672), everyone has finally gotten from France to Italy, where the castle of evil is located. I can only presume that crazy undead nuns are to follow in short order.

I can see why this was hugely popular in its day. The 200 pages before the main plot begins actually went by quite quickly, all things considered, and if you skip over Radcliffe's attempts at poetry, the whole thing cracks right along. (I actually haven't devoted that much time to it because of the Yukon Fic taking over my brain, and I'm wading through pretty fast.) Although I do wish she'd had a better editor; at times, I think she upended a bag of commas over her manuscript, and forgot to clean up after. There is no rhyme or reason to the extra commas that made their way in there.

There is much melodrama with the young lovers, but it's nowhere near as irritating as Austen's young lover melodrama. Hooray!
