Back on the ice
Jun. 28th, 2014 05:25 pmSkating this morning went better than I expected. My goal was pretty much "make it to the end of the session without collapsing," so the fact that I could still jump (minutely) and spin (badly) and do things like power pulls and cross rolls without too much degradation in power was gravy. My back edges were iffier than usual, and my Waltz 8 has returned to a very un-8-like squiggle, but if that's some of the worst of it, then I'm pleased.
Checking after three turns was the greatest casualty of my time off. It requires abdominal and back strength I just don't have right now after surgery and 3.5 weeks of being almost entirely sedentary. Spirals are also out of the question for about another month until the stretch doesn't pull at my incisions.
Actually, I think the greatest casualty may have been my stamina. From the moment I stepped on the ice, my thighs were screaming, "What are you doing?!?!", and my knees were moaning about how they thought I'd finally given up this foolishness. Luckily, that stopped after half an hour or so, but I was pooped when the session was over after ninety minutes and ended up having to take a nap this afternoon. I'd forgotten how much work skating is, at least when you aren't used to it--I felt like I used to after some of my very first practices last year.
\o/ exercise! I started my physical therapy and wobble board exercises again earlier this week, and it was so nice to get back to doing them. I don't get the endorphin rush exercise is supposed to give you--that's why I do a sport that requires as much mental involvement as physical, so there's something to keep my interest--but regular activity does seem to banish the little aches and pains that sitting around doing nothing causes. Yaaaay, movement.
