Whoever told you it was bad was lying, or at least severely misguided. It's not the most intellectually-stimulating flick to come down the block, certainly, but it's incredibly entertaining, and seriously cool. Plus there's all kinds of cool 1930s homages--War of the Worlds, King Kong, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, etc. I was just expecting to see a lot of cool CGI (whcih there was), but was pleasantly surprised by the characters and story as well. I think you'd really enjoy it.
