because except for possibly parts of Princes Street, I don't think there's a level street or sidewalk in the entire city.

So true... :) I was there for three weeks and I was always walking up or down...

we went off to look for the "ruins of Holyrood Abbey." as Ellen wanted to see them.

Could they be reffing the ruins out the back of the palace? I vaguely remember those, but not a specific name.

but we did end up in Holyrood Park and climbed a bit up Arthur's seat to see the ruins of another little church.

Oooh, I love that area. It's way pretty, and I love the ruins. I have some pics I should post, since I was there in summer. My "dorm" was right on the other side of Arthur's Seat, and a friend of mine managed to talk me into climbing it one evening. Oy.

dog that looks remarkably like Cricket lying on some bagpipes.

Greyfriar's Bobby, maybe? Little black shaggy doggy?

visited the German Christmas market.

Oooh, I'm jealous. Actually, I'm jealous of a lot of the stuff that you got to see. You were lucky to have time to linger - I always had class until 3ish and stuff closed at 4, 5 at the latest. I did the castle in like, 45 minutes iirc. *pout* I'd love to go back and see everything I missed. Perils of going as a student rather than as a tourist, I guess...
