Whew. Making it through the entire 4-hour ROTK:EE in one sitting deserves an Oscar in itself.
The best added parts were, as probably everyone will say, the Houses of Healing and the Mouth of Sauron. Although the Houses of Healing didn't tell you much more about Faramir and Eowyn than that little glance between them at Aragorn's coronation in the theatrical version; it was pretty, but kind of short--it looks like they just meet and immediately go on into holding hands and resting against each other as they stare out the window, which was...abrupt. Book was better on that part.
The Mouth of Sauron was just cool, though, especially the part where Aragorn sort of nonchalantly whacks off his head. Heh.
The scene with Faramir and Pippin discussing how Pippin's livery was once Faramir's was lovely as well, as was Merry's acceptance into service of Rohan.
The scene with Saruman was okay, but to be honest, I can see why they cut it out for the theatrical version...it was a little slow, especially as it didn't set up his takeover of the shire (which I remain glad was not ever filmed). I can see why they cut out pretty much everything else, too; I'm glad to have all the bits and pieces put back in, but the movie as a whole did feel a little more ponderous. Although I wish they'd kept that gorgeous pan up Minas Tirith towards the middle of the first disc; it would've been spectacular on a big screen. It was pretty spectacular on my own TV screen.
And now I have an urge to make Cupid icons. And then perhaps to actually get off my butt and plunk down the cash for a paid account so I can use all these icons I make. ;)
