Birthdays and Lemony Snicketses
Dec. 31st, 2004 06:29 pmHappy birthday to
jemster, and happy belated birthday to
ashism! I swear, I'm usually better at keeping up with this birthday business. Dunno what happened this month.

Saw A Series of Unfortunate Events yesterday. It was, well...unfortunate. Books are much better--far, far creepier. I'm usually okay with Jim Carrey, but he was totally not right for the part of Count Olaf, who needed to be much more nasty for the premise to really work--although I did like how they added in his line about how no one ever listens to children. The whole Baudelaire parents' letter + Snicket voiceover about family and sanctuary was awful; these books are not like that, and adding it in just rung a completely false note. If you didn't have Snicket gloating about how all these unfortunate events keep happening, you could have that bit of sap at the end, but you can't have both. Sunny was cute, though, and the Edward Goreyesque end credits were awesome. They should've done the whole movie like that. Oh, and Jude Law as Lemony Snicket (well, the voice of, anyway) was awesome, even when he was speaking horrible lines. He's been in, like, every movie made this year, but that's not really a problem for me. ;)
And the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory trailer is even better on the big screen. Must see that one next summer.
