Typically the leader is elected well before the election, and not chosen afterwards.
But what do you do if you hate all the candidates from your district except for the guy running under Party X, but you can't stand the guy (or girl) Party X has picked for PM? I do get the impression that in the UK, each party has more standardized planks than in the US, so that's less likely (if only by virtue of the fact that there are more parties), but it still seems kind of limiting.
