I don't know about public transportation around the isle (I didn't have to deal with it. Butler organized the weekend I was there.) However, my friend Chris says it's pretty easy to get around. And there are nice hostels to stay in on Skye and it'd probably to way to difficult trying to stay somewhere else and dragging yourself out to Skye in the mornings.
