It honestly hadn't occurred to me until you mentioned it, though if anything it actually brings back more memories of the old movie The Battle of Britain, where the British fighter controllers would be pushing around things on a large board to track German aircraft movements and British intercepts.
Yeah, it was mostly the cover picture that suggested the similarities to me. Well, that and the books are filled with space battles and politics, but that's kind of par for the course for most space operas.
And I saw one of those boards at Dover Castle in their wartime tunnels exhibit...huge thing. Very cool.
