Hmmm. I do love Whedon's storytelling myself...the layered plot and character arcs, the way he can keep such big ensemble casts both distinctive (even though I love FS as much as Joss' shows, I don't have the same trouble deciding definitively on my favorite characters!) and busy (I find he juggles the focus on various characters in the cast better within any individual story than just about anyone)...the way he thinks everything through on so many levels. It's amazing reading his production memoes for the film (in the Visual Companion book) and seeing how every aspect of the movie...music, camera angles, lighting, sound, fight choreography, etc...was all planned out to serve, reflect and develop the characters and the story. I learn so much as a writer, and as someone who wants to work in TV and film someday, both from watching his work and listening to his commentaries.
But...that is of course me, and we all enjoy different styles.
Definitely agree on the dialogue, though! His folks talk like shippers. *g* (Granted, many of the shippers are fans of and influenced by the Collective Works of Mr Whedon...but still!)
*Shrugs again on Mal/Inara* I love their bicker-into-the-sunset routine...they're probably my favorite such couple, really. (Excepting J&A, but I think they really outgrew a lot of the bickering.) I love how they can be so disrespectful and adoring of each other at the same time, and really mean it all, because they love each other without yet quite understanding the other person's life. And then you get the little glimmers that deep down they're not so different....
Don't mind me, I'm a mushball. :?P And you don't have to stand in the corner, we like our mutant outgrowths! ;?)
