Wow. That was a lot better than I expected it to be. The trailers give a lot of the plot away, so I knew going in that it would be some insane mixture of Kentucky, funeral, and road trip, and I was pretty sure something wouldn't fit, but it actually kind of did in a lot of ways. I laughed a lot more than I thought I would, and I rooted for Drew and Claire more than I ever expected to.
Speaking of Claire...dude. She's like the more manic and outgoing version of me. I would totally make a musical/pictoral map like the one she did (although I wouldn't have so many pictures of myself in it). And she (well, the director...but whatever) put eastmountainsouth on one of the mix CDs, which is awesome.
I think my favorite part was the construction video. That was fabulous. I can see parents and elementary-school teachers all over the nation writing to ask where they can get a copy of that. But I was definitely, like, in tears at the flaming bird/hotel evacuation scene. OMG, that was hilarious. As was "Chuck and Cindy: The Wedding." Cameron Crowe was totally poking fun at overblown southern society weddings, and it totally worked, and beautifully. And the funeral-related events were spot-on...I have been to visitations very much like that, oh yes.
One thing that didn't always work, though, was the music. Usually the music was awesome, but at times it was a little in your face--there were definitely some scenes that could've been improved by either instrumental music or no music at all.
Loveloveloved Claire's correcting Drew's pronounciation of "Louisville." And doing it right. And her accent! A Tennessee accent that didn't make me cringe! OMG! She got the "Bin" for "Ben," and didn't go ridiculous-crazy with the vowels andandand...dude, whoever did the dialect coaching was fantastic. Also fun was seeing signs along I-65 that I totally pass going to and from school in August and May, and the Louisville skyline and such. And Claire's TN license plate. (I think my attachment to this film comes partially from finding out about it while I was in one of my deepest "I'm tired of being a foreigner! I want to go home!" phases last year in England. I remember the fact that someone was making a movie about somewhere close enough to my home just made me feel ten million times better, for whatever stupid reason.)
But let me just say that the Nashville airport does not have anything resembling those multi-colored tile walls anywhere inside it. At least not that I've seen. And I go there a lot.
