I can see why it has to be on anything--for history majors, this paper often serves as the nucleus of their senior comps, and therefore they have to be able to write on what they're doing for comps--but yeah, it's getting annoying. I'm on the verge of asking the prof to arbitrarily assign me a time period and place, just so that I have somewhere to start. Augh.
