I saw someone explain this that helps me with it...slightly. From the Doctor's point of view, he could have saved everyone. He would have just had to fart around Earth for 3,000 years, which to him is probably like six months. So he could have hitched/hijacked a ride to the station and just waited around until he crashed through the window and then popped out of a broom cupboard or something. Yeah, it's kinda weak, but it does help me like it a bit better. :D (It's all about the denial!)
