More crossover nonsense
Jul. 16th, 2003 07:06 pmI've never posted anything that wasn't finished before, but there's a first time for everything. Here's mine. It's another silly crossover starring SG-1. Should I bother finishing it?
DISCLAIMER: Stargate SG-1 belongs to MGM, Gekko, Double Secret, and probably others. The Lord of the Rings and all associated stuff belongs to J.R.R. Tolkien. I'm a poor college student who's not making any money off of this; if you sue me, you'll get whatever spare change I can scrounge from under the dorm couch cushions when I go back next month.
FEEDBACK/ARCHIVING: Feedback is welcomed, and if I ever finish this, archiving will be as well. Send it all to author1@comcast.net .
CATEGORY: Humor, Crossover (semi-sorta-kinda-not quite), honest-to-god genfic(!)
SEASON/TIMELINE: Any season where Daniel's around and Sam is a major for SG-1. Doesn't really matter much for LOTR, but probably somewhere during FOTR.
RATING: G
NOTES: Another semi-crossover thing, although I'm aiming to use an actual character this time. Not one of the fellowship, though.

"Welcome to P5X-828, home of the pine tree," Colonel Jack O'Neill said to the rest of his team as the wormhole contained within the Stargate vanished behind them. "I know it's just the sort of sightseeing *I've* always wanted to do."
His 2IC, Major Samantha Carter, grinned at her CO's remark. It *was* interesting that Stargates on other planets were almost always located in clearings within forests much like this one.
Jack briefly glared at the mix of evergreen and deciduous trees surrounding the 'Gate before starting down the flight of stone steps to the ground. "All right, kids, let's move out. Although I'm sure there's *nothing* more interesting than trees, if there is, we should find it." Daniel Jackson rolled his eyes at the sarcasm dripping from O'Neill's voice, while Carter hid another grin and Teal'c remained as stoic as ever.
They walked through the trees for about half an hour, heading towards a point the MALP had indicated might once, maybe, have held civilization. Along the way, Jack felt a prickling on his neck that usually meant he was being watched, but he could find no evidence of any other living thing in the forest aside from his teammates. Still, he told them to keep extra eyes out (to which Teal'c had replied, "I have only two eyes, O'Neill," which had meant a long explanation of that particular bit of Earth slang, which left Jack wishing he'd never said anything), and told himself that he was just being paranoid. However, they'd had enough missions on innocent-looking planets that went way, way wrong that he felt somewhat justified in his paranoia, and vowed to be extra-vigilant when Carter was busy with her soil samples and Daniel was communing with his rocks.
They reached a large clearing in the forest. There were four or five patches of ground, set fairly close together, that looked like the ruins of homesteads. Daniel agreed that it would be worth it to take a closer look at the remnants of the walls, in case anything else had been left there. Sam set up her naquadah-testing shop and Daniel set about digging. O'Neill and Teal'c found themselves comfortable spots from which they could see the entire clearing in case any trouble came knocking.

Three hours later, Jack almost wished trouble *would* come knocking. The feeling that he was being watched was still there, and he couldn't seem to shake it. He almost--almost--wished that whatever was lying in wait would show itself already, even if it was dangerous, because he was completely bored out of his skull. Daniel had found several pottery shards and other trinkets to ooh and ahh over, and Carter was still running tests on whatever she was running tests on. Privately, Jack thought that she was creating extra work for herself to keep from becoming as bored as he was. Teal'c was...Teal'c. For all his great qualities, he wasn't exactly much of a conversationalist, and besides, they'd positioned themselves at opposite ends of the clearing to better guard their geeks.
Jack rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. He really wished that tingling feeling would go away. It could get a man to think he was *too* paranoid.
A pine branch brushed his arm.
Jack turned to look at the offending foliage, and realized that the entire tree was almost on top of him. Okay, he *knew* that the rock he was perched on had been at least three feet away from the nearest tree. Come to think of it, he thought, turning his head to look the other direction, the clearing looked quite a bit smaller than he remembered. It was almost as if the trees were closing in on them.
Jack clutched his P-90 more tightly and muttered, "Okay, what the hell is goin'..."
A roar split the peaceful tranquility of the forest, and SG-1 looked up in shock and amazement (even Teal'c) to see one of the great oak trees at the edge of the clearing seemingly come to life, great eyes blinking, gnarled hands waving in the air, and immense mouth thrown open with rage.
"WHO DARES ENTER WITH WEAPONS OF STEEL?" the "tree" roared. The "weapons of steel" were already out and pointed at the creature before he'd finished his sentence.
Not, of course, that the weapons would help them at all. Jack heard ominous creaks and rustles from behind him, and chanced a look back. More of the trees had woken up, for lack of a better term, and were staring at the four interlopers, anger evident on what passed for faces.
"Uh, Daniel?" Jack asked in a low voice. "Now would be a really good time to do that 'peaceful explorers' thing."

Should it be completed? If I do finish it, I'm gonna have to find a copy of The Two Towers and reread the part where Frodo meets Treebeard for the first time, 'cause I don't remember it at all, and am consequently at a loss as to how to write Treebeard, or any of the other Ents, for that matter.
Yes, I am really, really whacked.
