Prooooobably just gonna get myself into trouble here...
But I think we watch this show sometimes from very different angles, and never more than tonight.
I think the fact that this is a family/kid's show is key here. Rose makes her sacrifice to save the world, but in the world of this show there IS a magic which often saves you at the last moment. And I still like believing in that myself. So I loved Pete saving her at the last.
I also think, the way they'd developed Rose all along...she's the sort of bird (errr, no Brit-pun intended there, sorry!) that has to be pushed from the nest before she can fly. She's 19...apparently the two seasons of travel have been less than a year for her, or she didn't notice her birthday go by. And she loves the Doctor with an idealistic passion. As much as I love her, I wouldn't say she was ever one of the more independent companions really.
Would I have liked to see something happen which forced Rose to make the decision on her own, to sacrifice her love for the Doctor for something greater? Sure, that would've been a great story as well. You know it's the exit I'd love to write for Charley.
But on the other hand, I think this was absolutely true to Rose...and it still tore me up watching her and the Doctor being pulled apart.
And I do still think Rose made a very key choice. Staying with the Doctor, helping him seal the breach...and then giving up her safehold to complete the job. I knew she wouldn't die for it, but I still thought that was incredible.
But then...I know I'm an easier sell on this show!
