How much better would it have been had RTD given her the opportunity, the power to say, "I'm needed here, not with you, Doctor"? Of course, they'd set up the whole "I'll be with you FOREVER because we have the TWU WUV!" thing, but so what?
The foreverness is set up in the closing end of the season. Before that there's no reason she can't leave, and even then we get Jackie pointing out that staying with the Doctor would cost Rose her humanity. So why can't she get to make the choice to go?
And then the ending, with the bride (apparently the actress is well-known and well-hated in Britain?) and...WTF? In poor taste, I think.
I think it was the only option. They had to deflate the emo and give us a sense of "life goes on" and only comedy could get away with it, I think. Because it's just so bizarre.
