Seriously, you will love both shows. NX is something akin to a Stoppard play crossed with the most cracky episodes of Farscape. And maybe a dash of Moonlighting. With extra crack. But they were groundbreaking in the stories they told, and the way they told them. Chris, the local DJ, has a Greek Chorus-style role, where he quotes literature and philosphy and all kinds of things that sum up all the plot threads of the episode or comment on pieces of them at various points in the show. It's an ensemble, but the A and B plots are always connected in some way that's usually brilliant. Plus there's a big emphasis on the natural world that's just fantastic; I think the creators were actually some flavor of Buddhist, and they also made an effort to incorporate a lot of Native American philosophy, particularly that relating to nature. There are really funny, oddball characters, with incredibly well-done relationships between them, and enough metaphor and symbolism for any English Lit student worth his or her salt to sink their teeth into. It's WONDERFUL.
Ballyk is not as innovative and experimental, but it was never meant to be. It is very satisfying in the way that the first season of BSG was, and much of New Who is; there are only six to twelve episodes in a season, and it's obvious that there's been a lot of thought put into each of them. In the same way as NX, it's an ensemble show, but the various plots of each episode always end up informing each other to make something greater than the sum of its parts. And the characters will steal your heart. Every last one of them.
And yeah, there's 'ship pain. Perhaps more in Ballyk, because in NX, Maggie and Joel do sort of shoot themselves in the feet. But there's some 'ship love on the way to the pain, and there are always AUs... *g*
his whole piece was fascinating to read nevertheless!
Hee. Thanks. :) Both of them are so so densely packed with stuff to think about that I can't help but try and put it all down in writing.
