- I'm trying to care about Apollo and Starbuck, and it's almost working. Almost. I was hoping the writers would give us a few episodes of them at least trying to just be friends and live with the choices they'd made, but then again, the whole secret sexin' is very in character for both of them, as is Lee's guilty conscience. I was at first in gales of laughter at Kara's refusal to divorce Anders, but I suppose she is pretty religious, isn't she? And probably liking the idea of commitment for commitment's sake due to her past. The affair did bring the Anders/Lee conflict at the end to a head, which was nice from a dramatic standpoint (and the "You think you're the first?"...OUCH!), but overall, I was pleased when we cut back to the other two storylines. The whole thing is just too soap operaish for me. I'm in this for the Cylons and the mythology/mystery of Earth, and sometimes the various filial and filial-type relationships. Well, a little Adama/Roslin lovin' doesn't hurt, but only if it's every great once in a while. (If they reeled the L/K stuff out a little less at a time--like, this episode they just introduce the their affair, but don't have more than just a scene of them kissing, and then dole out the other information in later episodes--I'd like it better, too.)
- The other plotlines were much more interesting. I am always up for anything that delves into the Tribes of Kobol/Earth/Scriptures thing they're building up, so while this was pretty obviously just setup for part two on that front, I was still happy. I highly doubt they're gonna nuke it, although possibly it will in fact fall into Cylon hands. But then they'll misread it, or it'll be a worthless artifact, or something like that, I'm sure, so.
- I was at first thinking that when Sharon heard about Hera still being alive, she'd be off like a shot the Cylon ship, but now that she and Helo have confronted Adama about it, I don't think that'll happen in part two. Grace Park did a nice job playing the two Sharons facing off. She was very convincing as different people.
- Pappadama walking out on Roslin while she's in mid-sentence: oooh, BURN. I could just see Laura going, "Oh, shit," when Bill confronted her about Hera.
- The Cylon/Human meeting was well-done. Laura got off the best line: "The less this man says, the better this will go." BWAH! Indeed. A little of Baltar goes along way. Loved him going, "Wait, what?" when Cavil offered him to Adama and Roslin to "sweeten the pot." Heh heh heh.
- Speaking of Baltar, can he please shave? Please? And heh, Six-in-his-mind knows the humans want nothing better than to airlock him. I'm all for that, at least after we find out more about his and Three's "destiny" on the planet. I actually felt sorry for Caprica Six when they told her to bug off. It's interesting; all through this episode, I kept thinking of, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." You have the quadrangle of Anders/Kara/Lee/Dee, all of whom are pitted against each other. You have the new rift between Adama and Roslin over Hera, and between both of them and Sharon & Helo. There's also Three and Baltar versus Caprica Six, and consequences will definitely be coming from that one, oh, yes. It's a nice setup for part two, when I assume we'll be seeing some reunifications and recriminations. (And getting closer to Earth, maybe! I could use a bit of payoff for a lot of the clues they've been laying this season, actually...)
ETA: Someone on another board I watch mentioned that tonight is the first night of Chanukah. Hey, they found a temple tonight. Is there oil enough for eight days?
Two other, non-BSG comments from the airing:
- From the "Sci-Fi Essentials" on the new Children of Men film: "People thought it would be this sci-fi/fantasy thing, but [the director] has actually provided an excuse to talk about real world issues affecting us now." Because that's not what science fiction has been providing for almost a HUNDRED YEARS now or anything... *biggest rolleyes IN THE WORLD* How do people get to be so dumb? And why was this said on the Sci-Fi Channel?
- Wait. There are people....who will PAY...for pre-crumbled cheese? They will PAY for this? Something you can do yourself with a block of cheese and five seconds of time?
My faith in humanity, it dies a little more every day.
