The VEIL of MYSTERY! It gets mocked extensively in Northanger Abbey. [reeeeeeeeead iiiiiiiiiit....]

Having your POV character see something, make a big deal out of it, and then not let the audience in on it for hundreds of pages strikes me as bad form, but what do I know?

I think it was the late-eighteenth-century version of suspense. Sigh.
