Everything Danielewski does, he does for a reason, be it formatting, font choice, color, or spelling. I think as you read more you'll start seeing patters (note, for example, that the two or three times he misspells "pieces," the word that weird spelling forms. He never makes his intentions clear, but he had a purpose. That purpose may be that this book is the biggest joke ever written, but whatever.

The publishers indugled him on everything he wanted to do because he did all the layout himself. For free.
