I can grok the formatting--the twisting of a spiral staircase, the falling, the climbing, the blank spaces, etc. I can usually understand the funky punctuation (although I don't get his aversion to setting off interjections and addresses with commas). Not really getting the misspellings. It just looks like he didn't have an editor. (I've totally missed "pieces," and I'm on page 500.)
The publishers indugled him on everything he wanted to do because he did all the layout himself. For free.
