Maybe they were wary of the network deciding "oh hey, we don't need to show the pilot! We'll just start with ... THIS episode!" as they're wont to do all too often nowadays? So the writers built the rehashing in as a just-in-case?

You know, that makes a disturbing amount of sense. Especially given Bryan Fuller's history with networks.
