I SO think that's what he was doing. He already has a pen name (F.M. Luder if memory serves). In my head that's what he was doing, sitting there writing short stories for scifi zines or something (or y'know fanfic for LOST *G*) while being bored out of his mind.

I could definitely see that bit about Scully telling him to GO HOME you theorized about earlier too! :)
