He was a sidekick. Sometimes sidekicks need more attention than they get at home. So they strip. It's sad, but at least he developed his own independant income.
Hey, if people can pay their way through college doing it...
So plaid tights would be out of the question?
Unless you're doing some sort of 80s musical...
You know, I think about the line thing and it makes sense. Okay, not in the real world (at least not after the 80's), but for a dancer, I'll buy it.
Yep. Although making your leg line unbroken, and thus making you look taller, is the basis behind wearing pants, socks, and shoes of the same color, so that's kind of a real world application.
I don't know why but this makes me think of architect fashion. If you get famous enough you can even get away with wearing a cape and nobody will question it until you've been dead for a while.
Or you can design really freaky-looking things and people will pay you bajillions of dollars to do it, too. (I have issues with Frank Lloyd Wright, who is basically the only architect I know.)
I kind of want to change "Captain Obvious" so it alliterates, but the best I can come up with is Captain Conspicuous and that just doesn't click.

"Officer Obvious"? Not quite the same ring.
