I've heard of a divide between "science fiction" and "speculative fiction" (and to be honest I still don't understand why some people get so up in arms about it), but never "science fiction" and "sci-fi." Is the main difference between character-driven and plot-driven elements? That seems like a division that could apply in any genre...
