I think I read somewhere that it did become something of a dance craze, albeit a shortlived one. Maybe it makes sense when you're dancing with someone you're romantically involved with. I have to say, doing that with any of my usual partners back in college would've just produced fits of giggles rather than anything romantic-looking. We had a hard enough time with the "looking deeply into each others eyes" with our heads apart in Rumba.
