Oh, I agree for the most part. They're definitely escapist. Although...have you read the Gallafent book? He actually makes a decent case for taking some of the plotlines seriously. Sometimes he goes a bit too far out on a limb for my tastes (the section where he writes about Dale and Jerry having to "recreate a childhood together" made me roll my eyes, although probably some of my papers have made flimsier arguments), but in general I thought he made a good case, especially in the sections on Shall We Dance, Swing Time (he has a really interesting part on how the structure of the series started changing there), and Flying Down to Rio.
