I really liked this episode, the mystery was complicated enough to not be gratingly obvious. In fact I was fooled for a long time, because I thought sure they'd put the old flame/recognizable guest start as the killer, just because that's what a lot of detective-y shows do. the old flame plot may be cliche, but I think they played it out in a compelling way, not hamfisted.
I wasn't bothered by Lanie's pushing the ship. But then I still watch Bones, and compared to Sweets, just about everybody's subtle and non-obnoxious.
I wouldn't be surprised if Beckett used to have more friends than she does now. You end up forming relationships with people in certain situations, like school or work out of shared experiences and the human instinct to form social bonds. But even if you enjoy those friendships they don't often last past a change of circumstance (for instance marriage and a change of priorities). Beckett is nice, intelligent, attractive, she's easy to like, but she also keeps her own council. I wonder if she's got the sort of friends who feel a stronger connection to her than she's willing to feel for them. ...sorry, that got rambly :)
