It is definitely eclectic, but from the ones I've seen (Castle and The Muppet Show), your analysis of the link between them sounds spot-on.

Castle nearly made it onto my runners up list. I love all the characters. But it just doesn't have that certain level of ~~crazy~~ fantasy or science fiction that I yearn for...
