Yes, I think you're right. In H's Music History class, we talked about this concept; I'm pretty sure the term chord progression wasn't involved, but we discussed why and when such things became popular. (For our "why," I think we settled on something similar to your comment below, that it was some kind of instinctual math-related thing.)
