God, semi-colons. I love them. Well, I used to love them a whole lot more, and then in a grad class my screenwriting professor, like, totally yelled at me for like ten minutes about how no one understands semi-colons and it just confuses the average reader and screenplays shouldn't be fancy and just use little lines, damn it! (I later found out that by "little lines" he meant hyphens.) On the one hand, I don't think hyphens and semi-colons are interchangeable, and that semi-colons are useful. On the other hand, he was right, at least as far as a screenplay reading audience is concerned. So I've ended up cutting them out of my writing quite a bit, just out of habit.
