The UST does seem to be coming back lately. The first half the season, they just felt like two co-workers, maybe friends, with nothing more in the cards. They're the biggest reason I watch the show (can't stand mystery series), so I was tempted to quit watching, honestly.

I keep telling myself that for every Moonlighting there's a Northern Exposure where the two main characters sleep together and it doesn't change their relationship in the slightest...

Ohhhh, but NX ended badly too! Although they had a longer run post-getting together than most couples on TV do.
