Y'all guessed a bit more than half of them. Not bad at all, considering some were quite obscure indeed. :)
2. The sun is up, I'm so happy I could scream / And there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be
"Mint Car," by The Cure. It's from their Greatest Hits album, but as hits go, it's kind of obscure, I guess.
3. Why are some men born with minds that earn degrees / the loving cups, guilded plaques grace their study walls
"Everyone a Puzzle-Lover," by 10,000 Maniacs. Yeeeeah, I figured no one would get this. It's from their first album (1985), before they got semi-famous and well before Natalie Merchant got really famous.
10. We climbed through the canopy / Only to find a crack in our gauge
"The Beauty of Speed," by Tori Amos. Another well-known singer, but lesser-known track.
11. When I hear the sound of the black bird's cry / I know I left in the nick of time
"The Longer I Run," by Peter Bradley Adams. An excellent song, but he's not as well-known as he should be.
13. There's fifty dollars on this pony / Chase him down these tracks
"Betting on Trains," by Hem. Come onnnn, people, I've only pushed this band on you about eighty thousand times now. Though possibly you're all like me and mostly skip this track when it comes up in your music player. (The live version, interestingly, is oh-so-much better than the album one. Let me know if you don't have it and want it.)
15. Here we stand at the end of paths taken / guiding light inspiration, the slow decline
"Still Lost," by the Cowboy Junkies. I think they might have been bigger twenty years ago.
16. Write your name upon my sidewalk / I'll paint it on the door outside
"Remind Me," by Fisher. Apparently not as well-known as I'd thought.
17. But you lost yourself inside those sounds, / in the dimestore riches and the carnival crowds / and your shooting star it was burning out
"Ragdoll Princes and Junkyard Queens," by Antje Duvekot.
18. Oh be the music in my head, / the air around my bed, oh be my rest
"Tomorrow on the Runway," by The Innocence Mission.
20. There was a lady fine and gay / She looked so neat and trim / She went unto her garden wall / To see her ships come in
"John Barbury," by Kate Rusby. Folkies, you failed me! ;)
21. A dream coming down / cold on your skin and dark on the ground
"Love Is Snow," by Clare Burson. I would've been shocked if anyone could guess this one.
24. I won't face another day, I won't wait until tomorrow / I won't spend another night without you
"You Dance," by eastmountainsouth.
29. I want to crawl back inside my mother's womb / I want to shut out all the lights in this room
"Starting Now," by Ingrid Michaelson. Continuing my trend of early tracks from reasonably popular artists...
30. I've got no arms, I've got no legs / I've got no shoulders, but I've got a head / I've got a head that tells me stupid things to do
"Tin Man," by Animal Kingdom.
Thanks for playing, everyone.
