If they did a prequel, though, they'd have to set it no later than 1900, and the whole Marple gestalt loses something without the 1920s/1930s setting. (And if they just age Miss Marple down by 25-30 years so that she's 35-40 in the 1920s, again, why not just go with a new character? Or for that matter, just do a remake of Christie's Tommy & Tuppence mysteries, since they feature a younger woman.)
Even if either of those things could be miraculously avoided, I would have a reeeeeeally hard time swallowing Garner as a plain jane, even more than the average pretty Hollywood actress. The idea is pretty good, but she'd be all wrong for it, IMO.
