I honestly don't think I've seen SB in anything since While You Were Sleeping came out on video (although I recently stuck Miss Congeniality in my Netflix queue), but I didn't remember her as being so...bland. Are she and RR fun together in something else? 'Cause I definitely didn't get that from this movie. I think you're right about the director doing everything she could to counteract any kind of chemistry they might've had. Honestly I think SB might've had more chemistry with Mary Steenburgen/the mom character (another reason why the Margaret/Andrew relationship felt uncomfortably strange).
The illegal Canadian aspect was amusing, but I found it even funnier that the bitchiest character in the movie was Canadian, when they're always presented as unfailingly polite in American media. Tee hee!
