I so know what you mean about research. I've researched for a individual fics off and on for a solid YEAR before. Even when I don't use most of what I find out, I like to have it in my head, influencing the story. (And now I have a crapload of useless facts about things like Russian tea and Greek food and Tin Pan Alley songs rattling around in my head...)
