Was this role designed with Dana Delaney in mind, or was it just lucky (atypical) casting?
It wasn't designed for her; the original concept called for a 35-40-year old. However, ABC peoples saw her in the Castle two-parter last year and recommended by which I probably mean forced the showrunners of this one to consider her when they were casting the pilot. I think Murphey et al. had the final say on the casting, though, so it wasn't like they really wanted someone else.
I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen her in more stuff.
She's been in stuff, it's just...she apparently shares the same agent with Lee Pace, and so it tends to be crappy stuff. And canceled stuff. She headlined some kind of proto-Grey's Anatomy medical show and a dramatic! secretive! family saga, both around ten years ago, neither of which lasted more than a season. And there was, of course, three seasons of Desperate Housewives, which she left to do this, and...apparently her character discovered she was bisexual and ran off to Paris with another of the wives? I can't quite bring myself to watch that show, even for her, so I'm going on hearsay.
Uh, basically aside from some guest spots on decent TV shows, her last watchable thing was China Beach in the late eighties/early nineties, which I hear was incredible (and a few scenes on YouTube do seem to confirm this), but hasn't been released on DVD because of arguing over music rights.
(You didn't watch BSG, did you? She had a big guest role in one of the more important episodes of that.)
Well, back in the day when they were made of actual animals...
