The brown things are the nymphs' discarded exoskeletons. The actual cicadas are black with transparent wings and red eyes.
Note how far out around the tree trunk the bugs/bug skins extend, and how deep the piles are.
Pretty much every surface looks like this: tree trunks, walls, the patio, the driveway...

In other news, apparently there was a lot of carnage at ABC today as they leaked pickups and cancellations, but Body of Proof survived and will get a second season! Hurrah! This likely means we won't see the last four episodes of this season until September, alas, but I'd rather have that then see them earlier with no second season.
I haven't looked up info on all the shows they and the other networks who have announced pickups already are going to air, but from what I've seen, Once Upon a Time looks interesting. rowdycamels, remember how we were saying a show centered on travel agents could be interesting? Apparently we were sort of prophetic!), but it's also billed as a very soapy soap opera, and...nope, don't think so.
Does anyone know if there's a page with summaries of all the new series that have been picked up all in one place? Googling individual titles is getting old.
Speaking of new series, apparently there is a Warehouse 13 spinoff in development, and it stars H.G. Wells! It will take place in the 1890s, and feature her as a sort of sciencey Sherlock Holmes (because god knows we can't have a show without mysteries-of-the-week). I'm torn over this; one the one hand, MOAR H.G. WELLS YAY!, but on the other, half the reason I liked her was because she and Myka were so slashy on W13. But maybe H.G. will guest star on W13 a lot since they'll probably be filming in the same studio?

Bwahahaha!)

Date: 2011-05-14 04:41 pm (UTC)Anyway, speaking of HG Wells (kinda), I've been reading the Parosol Protectorate series (first book is Soulless (http://www.amazon.com/Soulless-Parasol-Protectorate-Gail-Carriger/dp/0316056634)) by Gail Carriger, and I keep thinking "I wonder if Becca would like this?"
It is very steampunk, with vampires and werewolves and ghosts just like any other citizens under Queen Victoria in the 1800s. So far, none of the creepy sulking around between shades of grey that is usually more traditional in Urban Fantasies these days, either. Just people, with their own variations of good and bad, bastards and saints and everything in between.
Anyway, the main character Alexis would probably find a kindred soul in Rebecca Fogg, though she is more snarky consultant to Queen Victoria on the state of supernatural goings-ons than super secret agent out in the field, but their personalities are quite similar and just as awesomely snarky and sarcastic. Alexis also doesn't know how to be subtle, which makes for some very entertaining confrontations.
Just thought I'd pass word of the series along because it seems like something you would like. From a purely Grammar Nazi stand point, it does kind of bother me that the author jumps around between points of view all the time, but so far it hasn't kept me from seriously enjoying the series. I can ignore the POV jumps as long as Alexis keeps whacking someone in the head and/or groin with her parosol at least once per book. :)

I think ABC formally announces its lineup on Tuesday so you may have better luck finding a more comprehensive list then. I know these things because Daniel works for an ABC show.

I think it's due to some of each brood showing up off-schedule, mating and laying eggs, and then the cycle perpetuating until you have enough to form another brood on that schedule. There are always some early birds and stragglers.
I've heard that ABC announces it schedule on Tuesday. Which show does Daniel work for?
