Exactly! I don't really go in for vampire fiction, but there's so much of it out there at the moment that by sheer default I run into it a few times per year in the course of looking for books centered on other things (like this one, which attracted me because of the way it sounded like The Historian--incidentally, another surprise!vampire book, though a much better one--with its focus on historians doing research in interesting European places). And I really dislike this "being a vampire is just like being a human with a really long lifespan and some odd dietary habits. It's awesome!" trend.

I actually hate the woobie parts too. If I'm going to suffer through a vampire novel, I want the vampire to be downright EVIL. And there should be some staking involved.
