O Flist, I've found myself watching some Northern Exposure episodes of late, and I'm contemplating a complete (well, complete through the first six episodes of S6, anyway) rewatch. Anyone feel like joining me? (P.S. If you like quirky, charming, intelligent, unexpectedly moving dramedies, now would be an EXCELLENT time to discover this one!) I've given a thought to making a rewatch comm, although I only lasted until the end of S4 on the recent B5 rewatch. Then again, NX only had fifteen episodes total for the first two seasons, so it wouldn't be quite as long as five seasons with a show that had 20+ episodes each year.

In other news, JMS is trying to re-acquire the rights to B5. What for, no one's sure.

My first reaction is OMG REBOOT REBOOT REBOOT!!!!, but I'm not sure how one would change the story significantly enough to make it worth it.

Finally, a poem I recently read and loved:

Because You Asked about the Line Between Prose and Poetry
by Howard Nemerov

Sparrows were feeding in a freezing drizzle
That while you watched turned to pieces of snow
Riding a gradient invisible
From silver aslant to random, white, and slow.

There came a moment that you couldn’t tell.
And then they clearly flew instead of fell.

Oh man. The thing about a B5 reboot is that it gets me excited in the sense of how they could recast it with more women! more non-white people! more actually textual queer (and maybe less simultaneous fridging and making-evil-of lesbians)! And I think you could make the broad plot arcs the same while having character variation and less clunky-overall writing and better pacing, and basically smooth away all the things that were wrong last time and probably create new things in the process. All of that would be AMAZING.

But on the other hand, I try to picture anyone but Jurasik and Katsulas playing Londo and G'Kar, and my entire mental train skids to a bewildered halt.

Maybe if it was a reboot with drastically different types of characters, maybe?

Given that JMS's main work for the last few years has been in comics, I've been wondering why there's no B5 graphic novel series, etc. So I'm kind of hoping that's what he's getting the rights for. Something better than the asstastic '90s comics, obviously, but the medium would get around the problems of deceased and aged actors, expense and so forth.

Unfortunately, the very next day we got this:

Babylon 5 creator denies the series is coming back. (http://io9.com/5832651/babylon-5-creator-denies-the-series-is-coming-back?tag=babylon-5)

Direct quote from JMS: "Walter misspoke: I am not in negotiations with WB to develop more Babylon 5." Which means my dream of having the series rebooted with Bear McCreary composing the music shall have to wait a decade or so. Siiiiiiiigh.

Also, the poem you quoted at the bottom reminded me of two things I meant to tell you - first, that I picked up A.S. Byatt's Possession and have just started it (it may take me a while, as it is not precisely a reading-on-the-treadmill book), and that you should totally look into Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente. It has gorgeous, haunting imagery, and I think you would love it. ♥

But definitely worth reading in general.

Very much so. I can just see that it might get delayed, since most of my reading time lately seems to be while I'm running. Alas. I'm sure I'll catch up when I'm on vacation in a few months.

Valente's prose is not for me, but thanks for thinking of me. :D

She's a bit different, isn't she? I haven't read anything else by her, but I liked her style for the fairy-tale theme of "Deathless."
