Oh, I know even winter isn't relentless darkness up north; I was just engaging in a bit of hyperbole. :)
The show itself was purposefully vague about how far north the town was, and purposefully wrong a few times as well--no way was it possible to have days on end of no daylight or no nighttime (not even twilight, just bright sun or pitch dark for 24 hours at a stretch), respectively, but they had episodes centered on those circumstances nonetheless. Artistic license, I guess.
I was in Scotland (56N) in late June a few years ago, and I remember being utterly astounded at the fact that I was going to bed before the sun had finished setting--at 10:30.
