My understanding is that money from DVD and iTunes sales goes directly to the studio (Warner Brothers, in this case), and the more money they make that way, the less they charge the network to air the show. The less Fox pays to show the series, the less ad revenue they need to recoup costs, and the lower the ratings can go before they stop breaking even. So iTunes purchases don't count in ratings, but in a roundabout way, they could help, so I'd do it!
