Ah, I see. I admit it's been a while since I've seen the films but I could see that happen.

It's been about six years since I saw it as well, so I may have a different opinion if I saw it again...but definitely my strongest memory of it is astonishment that it came after the films of the 30s rather than before.

For what it's worth, here are some movies I consider screwball comedies:

Bringing Up Baby - This isn't my favorite, but it is the first one that comes to mind when I think of the term (for a Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn pairing, I prefer Holiday, which is...smaller? calmer? while still being funny and romantic)
It Happened One Night - ♥ Possibly the most charming film ever made.
Double Wedding - Adorable :)
Libeled Lady
His Girl Friday
Ball of Fire
Midnight
Practically everything Fred and Ginger ever did together, but especially Top Hat and The Gay Divorcee (which are basically the same movie...); also Carefree, but with certain reservations based on the creepy Freudian aspects.
The Major and the Minor - Again with reservations based on some creepiness.
The Thin Man (and sequels) and Hitchcock's The 39 Steps are comedic mysteries with screwball elements, if not screwball comedies themselves.

I haven't yet seen Twentieth Century, Theodora Goes Wild, The Lady Eve, or The Palm Beach Story, but they're usually considered part of the genre as well. As are My Man Godfrey and The Awful Truth, which I dislike but other people seem to enjoy. ;)
