Welcome to the Small Fandom and Rare Pairing/Rarely-Written Character Promote-a-thon!
You know the glow of, "I never knew I needed fic for that, but now I do and there it is and this is awesome!" you get from Yuletide? Or the sweet, sweet triumph of finally finding something for that insanely rare pairing on page fifty-four of the Google results for their names?
This meme aims to amplify that, and, for writers/vidders/artists, take away that sad, lonely feeling you get when you realize there's nowhere to post your creation for a tiny fandom besides your own journal.
Comment here with links to any rare fandoms/characters/pairings you've created stuff for and want to pimp! This is not just for fanfic; vids, art, even, I don't know, embroidery or cake decorating or things like that are welcome. If you made it and it's rare, link to it.
As a general guideline for "rare," I would say something is rare if there are fewer than 50ish works out on the intarwebs, but I don't want to be the police here, so use your best judgment. If it's something you've hunted for to the bitter end of a search engine's results, or you've read everything three times now, go for it. Long or short, old or new, G or NC-17, single fandom or crossover, all are welcome.
Though this meme emphasizes works that haven't been posted all over or received a lot of attention, if you want to promote a Yuletide fic you wrote or something similar, that's perfectly fine.
And if you find that fic or vid or art of your dreams, I also encourage you to give the creator some feedback!
Requests for rare things you'd like to see are welcome too! If you're dying for, say, The Phantom Tollbooth fic and don't know where to find it, comment with "Request: The Phantom Tollbooth" in your subject line.
Please link to this meme! I would love to see as many tiny fandoms and rarepairs/rarely-written characters on here as possible. And come on, you know you're hoping this reaches that one person who wrote fic for that Squonk Opera show you saw years ago.

Date: 2010-10-18 12:00 am (UTC)And yes, you should! They are love. Probably the best one to read next would be "Expendable" (which is really the first) and then "Ascending" (which takes off with a minor character from "Expendable" and carries on her story).

Title: break/even
Author:
Universe: Canon divergence (Season 5 + 3 years)
Genre: Angst/Romance
Rating: T
Warning: None
Pairing: Ryan/Stacy
Word Length: 9,928 - COMPLETE
URL: FF.net | DW | AO3

Title: How Will I Know?
Author:
Universe: Canon divergence (Season 5)
Genre: Drama/Romance
Rating: K+
Warning: None
Pairing: Ryan/Stacy
Word Length: 5,698 (4 chapters) - COMPLETE
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6381789/1/
Author's Summary: This story takes place in August 2000, and in this AU, the band dissolved after Ryan left, so there wasn't anything after Season 5. Ryan and Stacy meet again at a KI reunion.
Why I'm recommending this piece: *flails* AUGH SOMEONE ELSE IS WRITING KI FIC BESIDES ME, AND FOR THIS PAIRING! :D :D :D LOL, okay, let me calm down a little bit...this is actually a really adorable fic set 15 years after Season 5 (1988), in which three incarnations of Kids Inc reunite at the P*lace. It's lovely not only for the Ryan/Stacy storyline underlying the whole thing, but also for all the canon references, the love for Mickey, and the careers WhyteRoze28 assigned to everyone. They all really fit, you know? I'm a little jealous that I didn't come up with the idea first, LOL. It's awesome to see someone else's take on the characters, as well as the ship, because its feels like I'm flying solo 99% of the time.

Title: Scratched Surface
Author: lydiabell
Universe: Canon
Genre: Drama/Romance
Rating: T
Warning: None
Pairing: Jonathan/Maddie
Word Length: 1,768 - COMPLETE
URL: http://archiveofourown.org/works/3635
Author's Summary: Maddie has a scare.
Why I'm recommending this piece: A beautiful piece set sometime around the second series that explores the finer points of the relationship developing between the two main characters. It really gives a depth and nuance to both Jonathan and Maddie that's only hinted at in the series itself. Really excellent stuff, for a fandom I've never seen fic written for. A definite must-read for all fans of the show! =)
You can also check my rec list, full of awesome fic and art, and consider yourself pimped at my journal =)

There's also a gesture toward DRD romance, and some bits of Chiana/Jool (which I think is still rare? It was in 2003, anyway), in Farskate.
A Few Rare Pairs Recs: Myka/HG, Ivanova/Garibaldi
Date: 2010-10-18 06:22 pm (UTC)The Future an Experiment by
At last count, there were nine Ivanova/Garibaldi fics on the internet that I had not written. WOES. Anyway, here are my favorites:
Dead Souls by
Interesting Positions and the sequel, You Have to Dance With the One You Came With by Lianna Zoe. Closet sex! And then trying to make things work out afterwards. (This...seems to be kind of a thing for this pairing? That says either something about them or about those of us who write them, I'm not sure.)

Date: 2010-10-19 01:02 am (UTC)Request: Dream Park?
Date: 2010-10-19 02:04 am (UTC)Precis For the un-initiated:
In the final years of the 20th century, the Big Earthquake happened, dropping a large slice of the California coast into the Pacific. Amazingly, this did not cause the collapse of civilization as we know it; indeed, by the 2040s things look pretty good, and at least to a degree, the geeks appear to have inherited the Earth. Now southern California's premier entertainment destination is Dream Park, where players and Game Masters come together to participate in high-tech live-action role-playing adventures...and if they play well enough, they can make serious money on the media rights. But that's not all Cowles Industries, owner of Dream Park, is up to; they're also involved in business and political deals that may just reshape the real world, too.
Dream Park is the story of the South Seas Treasure Game, involving real-life murder, corporate espionage, and what might be the largest treasure ever included in a role-playing epic, real or fictional. [Those of you who've read the book may snicker now.] The Barsoom Project is the story of the second Fimbulwinter Game, where some Gamers are playing for their health, some are playing for their sanity, and some are playing for the opportunity to terraform Mars. And The California Voodoo Game is the story of what happens when really experienced Gamers start thinking outside the box (and the Game map), with varying degrees of good and evil intent.
This being a Niven series, both the tech and the gaming logistics are worked out in impressively logical depth. This being a Barnes series, the action/adventure quotient is impressively high. And this being a series about game-geeks, there's a cheerfully wicked sense of the absurd in play at all the right moments. (Dream Park was written before LARP campaigns were really popular...and got the idea right enough that readers created a real International Fantasy Gaming Society spun off from the books.)
Fic Recs!
Date: 2010-10-20 02:21 am (UTC)Dead Zone
Rather than post all of the links separately, I'm sending those interested parties here (http://community.livejournal.com/deadzonefic/2980.html), to a very handy Dead Zone Fiction Master List I ran across several years ago. I've probably read at least 70% of the stories listed there, and I've never been disappointed. Some of my personal favorites are Dirigo, The Big Picture, and A Vision in Scarlet
Two more favorites that aren't listed there as far as I can tell are:
* What It Seems (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Seems.html), an AU in which *Sarah* is the one who went into the coma and left Johnny behind to be comforted by Walt
* Like Minds (http://www.neon-hummingbird.com/storyteller/fiction/angel_likeminds.html), an Angel/Dead Zone crossover where Cordelia runs into Johnny at a hotel bar. This one is probably my favorite Dead Zone story of all time, and it ranks in the Top Five for favorite fan fiction of all time... it is just that good.
Forever Knight
My Evil Twin is a Vampire! (http://www.fkfanfic.com/fanfic/m/myev1943.txt) And yes, it is pretty much just as much fun as it sounds, even if the original seems to have disappeared into catacombs of the World Wide Web and the above link goes to a kind of annoyingly formatted text copy. Still totally worth it, though.
Pretender
Chasing Cars (http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/23/chasingcars.html)
Fedayee (http://elliottsilver.tripod.com/jarod45.htm)
Long Way Home (http://www.neon-hummingbird.com/storyteller/fiction/pretender_longway.html)
Little Girl Lost (http://www.neon-hummingbird.com/storyteller/fiction/lgl/)
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Garden in the Punjab (http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2009/works/34858)
Silently Beloved (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3297685/1/Silently_Beloved%22)

Big Fandoms, Small Characters
Doctor Who/NCIS - Rebuilding a Life (http://settiai.livejournal.com/1114407.html). Okay, so neither of those particular fandoms are anywhere *near* small, but I figure I can sneak this rec in there as it is centered around a not so common character - Fitz, from the Doctor Who book verse, who gets dumped in DC while the Doctor goes off to fight the Time War.
Stargate Atlantis - Death and the Astrophysicist (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3218958/1/). GRODIN FIC! ::hugs it and loves it:: Also, it is part of a series of one shots that can be all read together (all you miss are a few in jokes), though Grodin only features in this one. A few of them do focus on other minor characters, though.
These are just a few of my favorites. If you want more recs from any of the above or some of the bigger fandoms, you are more than welcome to here (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?keyword=fan+fic+recs&user=rensong&sortby=des) and choose from the other 300 or so. I am a big of a fic whore. ;)
