Welcome to the Small Fandom and Rare Pairing/Rarely-Written Character Promote-a-thon!

You know the glow of, "I never knew I needed fic for that, but now I do and there it is and this is awesome!" you get from Yuletide? Or the sweet, sweet triumph of finally finding something for that insanely rare pairing on page fifty-four of the Google results for their names?

This meme aims to amplify that, and, for writers/vidders/artists, take away that sad, lonely feeling you get when you realize there's nowhere to post your creation for a tiny fandom besides your own journal.

Here's How This Is Gonna Work

Comment here with links to any rare fandoms/characters/pairings you've created stuff for and want to pimp! This is not just for fanfic; vids, art, even, I don't know, embroidery or cake decorating or things like that are welcome. If you made it and it's rare, link to it.

As a general guideline for "rare," I would say something is rare if there are fewer than 50ish works out on the intarwebs, but I don't want to be the police here, so use your best judgment. If it's something you've hunted for to the bitter end of a search engine's results, or you've read everything three times now, go for it. Long or short, old or new, G or NC-17, single fandom or crossover, all are welcome.

Though this meme emphasizes works that haven't been posted all over or received a lot of attention, if you want to promote a Yuletide fic you wrote or something similar, that's perfectly fine.

And if you find that fic or vid or art of your dreams, I also encourage you to give the creator some feedback!

Requests

Requests for rare things you'd like to see are welcome too! If you're dying for, say, The Phantom Tollbooth fic and don't know where to find it, comment with "Request: The Phantom Tollbooth" in your subject line.

Promotion!

Please link to this meme! I would love to see as many tiny fandoms and rarepairs/rarely-written characters on here as possible. And come on, you know you're hoping this reaches that one person who wrote fic for that Squonk Opera show you saw years ago.

Narbonic
I Suppose This Means They Read the Fanfic - Fanfic for Kim Possible isn't particularly rare; OTOH, fic for Shaenon Garrity's Webcomic Narbonic is, and this crossover ended up with rather more Narbonic in it than I'd initially anticipated.

Wizard of Oz (Baum et al)
By itself, Oz-based fanfic is probably not quite obscure enough to be counted "rare", precisely; that said, I offer these two stories -- both written for Yuletide -- because both of them focus on characters not often spotlighted in the stories one does find.

The Solitary Sorceress of Oz - An innocent question from Trot leads to an invitation from Glinda the Good -- and a surprising revelation.

Four Views of General Jinjur - Little is known of the woman who once conquered the Emerald City.

Babylon 5

The Other Woman (http://rivendellrose.livejournal.com/630023.html) - Lochley/Delenn, season 5, PG-13. Delenn wants to have a talk with Lochley. Lochley thinks she knows why. A teensy bit AU for the real way that Lochley's relationship with one John Sheridan is made clear.

Out Here (http://rivendellrose.livejournal.com/467222.html) - Ivanova/Lennier, post-season 5, PG. There's a lot of lonely people out near the Rim.

Jinjur is really rather a cipher in the original books. In The Land of Oz, we first see her as General of the Army of Revolt -- consisting of 400 beautifully uniformed girls with knitting needles, which is, as Mombi points out, actually a fairly dangerous proposition. She then turns up very briefly in the next book, assuring the recently installed Princess Ozma that she's happily married (though the man with the nine cows does not appear onstage). And then she reappears about nine books later, no husband in evidence, running a caramel farm in the Ozian countryside at a Convenient Location for that book's main characters to stop by and ask for sanctuary (having been awkwardly transformed by an evil giantess).

So when I got a Yuletide match that asked for a Jinjur story, I had to figure out what sort of background might lead a retired general to go into caramel farming. I decided that (a) Jinjur's parents must have been farmers (very common in Oz), but (b) they must have been growing something very different from caramels. Ergo: pickle farmers. (The story also gave me a chance to poke at some of the stickier continuity issues The Land of Oz raises -- it is, in effect, the equivalent in the Oz series to the The Magician's Nephew in the Narnia canon. There is a longer story in the back of my mind, one that proved too complicated to finish for Yuletide, that draws on both this Jinjur story and "Solitary Sorceress" to really explain the Army of Revolt's origins. But that's likely to simmer for a long while yet before I get round to actually writing it.)

Hello! This seemed like the sort of thing that welcomed random strangers so I hope it's cool me popping in. Looking through my stuff, my oddball pairing works were all posted to general comms for those fandoms and mostly got a moderate amount of attention, but I have two pieces of fanart for canon-but-rare pairings that I didn't really post anywhere: (both entirely sfw)

Fingersmith:

Dancing Sue and Maud dance. Sue/Maud fanart

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

I remember Yule Morning from Yuletide, with enormous pleasure. It's impressive on a lot of levels...and really deserves a stage production somewhere down the line.
