icepixie: ([Fringe] Olivia looking up)

Happy new year! Wow, 2012. I feel so futuristic.

So, I just rewatched all of Fringe S1 in roughly a week. I kept coming up against episodes and five minutes into them going, "Oh, it's this one" (where "this one" means "brain liquifaction via computer virus" or something similarly disgusting), but I'm hunting clips for four different potential vids, so I had to watch them all. Plus there was sometimes a little nugget that relates to the mytharc. (Like Peter commenting in "Inner Child" that he remembers a particular GI Joe having a scar on the left side of his face instead of the right. BECAUSE IT DOES IN REDVERSE.) But it all starts to come together in the latter half of the season, particularly with "Ability" and then "Bad Dreams" through the finale, and especially with the benefit of hindsight, you can see how everything is tying in to the larger plot and how the characters are putting the pieces together, and it's like those wonderful moments in music when a bunch of dissonant lines resolve into a chord.

Coupla specific thoughts:

Oh, Charlie. I miss you. I remember thinking on my first time through S1 that he and Peter were basically taking up the same narrative space, and while I still think this is true, now that Peter is important pretty much by nature of his very existence, it feels less like redundancy to me. Also, it was so nice for Olivia to have such a good, supportive friend. Maybe Amber!Astrid and Amber!Lincoln will combine to become that for her this year.

I guess they actually did resolve the whole thing with John Scott--he was working for the NSA to take down the completely not-fringey bioweapons dude, and the only thing weird about it all was that he and Olivia did a mindmeld. They caught the bioweapons seller, John vamoosed from Olivia's mind, it's all over. (Though...I think Massive Dynamic might still have his body? Maybe not; in "Transformation," it did seem like they were starting to reach a point where they couldn't stop the decay any longer. Either way, definitely a storyline we can live without.)

Peter's being-vaguely-chased-by-mobsters story is still out there being unresolved, but I really don't care if we never get resolution on that. I guess it doesn't matter in the Amber timeline anyway.

I missed Nina being sorta evil, and I'm glad she's back to it in the Amberverse!

In other news, lately I have found myself reeeeeally craving fic for old movies, to the point where I'm contemplating setting up a promptfest or perhaps even an exchange. Exchanges seem to actually produce fic, but promptfests are much less pressure, and I am all about my fannish life being as low-pressure as possible. Perhaps it could be something like, "Submit 3 prompts, then write one before you're allowed to submit 3 more," along with some very generous and relaxed deadlines for people who want them? I dunno. Thoughts, anyone?
