Ooof. Whoever wrote this one has a tin ear for dialogue. I think they might have been going for some kind of heightened/metaphorical language to echo the country music genre, but it really didn't work.

Other than that, it...wasn't terrible? Not as good as the pilot or even the second episode, though. I did enjoy the ominous TEDDY'S GOING TO JAIL FOR SLEAZY FINANCIAL DEALINGS signs, Lamar not being quite so Daddy McEvil as usual, and...well, I'm sure there was other stuff.

Meth-head Mama (or I guess it's Oxy-head Mama, apparently?) should prove to be interesting. (For a minute, when Rayna's sister was talking about their mother's "singer/songwriter friend," I was sure it was going to be Juliette's mother! But no, it was just Rayna-and-Deacon's earlier incarnation, very likely down to Rayna not being Lamar's kid.) I could've predicted Juliette stealing the nail polish would be all over the internet even without the preview, and the self-destructive streak she's showing should be entertaining in a trainwrecky sort of way.

I'm getting a little tired of Rayna stringing Deacon along and Deacon doing the same to Juliette, but at least the second of these appears to have come to an end.

I figured I would go through this series disliking Avery, because I thought they would go the route of "wannabe musician boyfriend pouts jealously when girlfriend gets a record deal," but I'll be damned--he turned into a pretty cool guy. He's the most supportive character in the cast! Heh, well, he started out being solely supportive, then I guess he realized he was standing next to Watty White and thought, "Well, since I'm here..."

Scarlett, on the other hand, grows ever more annoying. Part of it is the accent, which is godawful; she sounds like, well, an Australian doing a poor imitation of a southern accent, which she is. Avery and Gunnar aren't much better, but she's truly terrible--it sounds like she just fell off the turnip truck.* Anyway, that coupled with the complete lack of backbone did not endear her to me this time around. Christ, she moved to Nashville for a man, turned down a demo offer for a man, choked at the demo until the man was there...can she do anything without staring dewey-eyed at Avery?

Actually, you know what? Screw it. I'm flying the Avery/Gunnar flag! Those two sweet, swell guys should get together and make each other very happy, and leave Scarlett to dither around about whether she wants to make music or be a waitress or whatever, just as long as she's off my screen.

...Seriously, though, I hope the guys at least get to play together at some point. That would be nice.

Something that bugged me about this episode--and indeed has been bugging me about the whole series, though in a more muted way--was the completely disjointed sense of time it had. The way the scenes were cut together implied things were happening at the same time, but they couldn't possibly be happening simultaneously because it would be night in one scene and day in the other, for example. Or there was the bit at the beginning, where Rayna called the older kid down to breakfast and then hustled her off to school, like, thirty seconds later.

Couple little things:

Juliette Barnes deigns to shop at Kroger? (For that matter, she does her own shopping at all?)

Ooooh, Rayna and Deacon had their little chat at the Percy Warner steps. I keep meaning to get out that way with the dog, but she gets carsick, so I haven't been.

Dear God, how is that song appropriate for a six-year-old to sing?

* The rest of the cast is not terrible, IMO, especially since we don't know where most of them are supposed to be from. Juliette has a recognizably wrong accent, but I wouldn't put it past her to be putting it on as part of her image. Rayna and Deacon sound almost genuine. Lamar is passable as an old money type. Teddy and the girls, thankfully, have the urban Generic American accent that, you know, lots of people here do.

I've been keeping up with the show for the local flavor, but I don't really care about the characters so far. Scarlett's accent, on the other hand, is driving me crazy. No one sounds like that! I cringe every time she opens her mouth.

I want to like Scarlett so much, but it turns out that filming the cautionary tale of Not Hurting Your Man is just annoying rather than something I can cheer for someone to overcome.

I think there's no question that Juliette is putting on the accent for professional effect...and I wonder whether Rayna long ago did a similar thing. I haven't paid close enough attention to the difference in her accent between on stage and off, but it wouldn't surprise me.
